I ran to the base of the wall. Carl hovered above me and lowered his appendages. I grabbed onto his hands and he ascended into the air. He lifted me up and over the wall, clearing the laser motion detectors atop the fence. He put me down on the ground, past the shrubs.

All of Petrov's security forces were focused on the burning car out front.

I stayed in the shadows and ran toward the main house. Again, Carl lifted me up onto a second floor balcony. All of the windows on the first floor would likely have sensors. Entering through a window or door on the ground level would trip the alarm. Typically, second-floor windows lacked any type of protection.

I pulled my sleeve over my knuckles and punched a pane of glass in the French door. It splintered, and fragments dropped to the ground, shattering. I hoped the sound wasn't enough to attract the guards’ attention.

I reached my hand through the windowpane of the French door and unlatched the deadbolt. I was careful not to slice my wrists on the sharp shards of glass. I eased the door open and slipped inside along with Carl.

The room was dark. It appeared to be a spare bedroom. It was elegantly decorated with a four post bed, fine art on the walls, a dresser, a chest of drawers, and a full-length vanity mirror in the corner.

I eased across the floor, careful not to creak any floorboards. I cracked open the door to the hallway and peered out. I could barely see the entrance foyer over the railing in the hallway. Victor Petrov's rage filled voice echoed off the vaulted ceilings in the foyer as he spoke to one of his guards. "What the hell is going on?"

The guard shrugged. "Car bomb."

"In one of my vehicles?"

"No. On the street. It just pulled up and exploded."

I could barely see the top of Victor's head from this angle. "I want you to stay on a heightened level of security for the rest of the evening. Conduct a thorough sweep of the premises. Leave no stone unturned. This has to be some type of diversion. I can guarantee you, someone's going to make an attack tonight, or at least probe our defenses."

"Everything is clear, sir. None of the sensors have been tripped, and the drones haven't picked up anything unusual."

From what I could see, the guard was a tall guy with long curly dark hair. He stood about a foot taller than Victor.

"Stay on your toes, Ramon. Call me at the first sign of something unusual."

“Do you want me to cancel all visitors."

"Yes."

"What about Savannah? You’re scheduled for an 8:30pm massage with her."

"You can let her through.” I could tell Victor was anticipating her services, which probably included a lot more than just a massage. “But check her for weapons, just to be sure.”

"Yes, sir."

Victor spun around and trotted up the grand staircase. He moved down the hall and slipped into the master bedroom.

Ramon relayed the information to the rest of the staff.
